The Acura TSX A-Spec Concept introduced at the 2005 SEMA show is a one-off masterpiece. It rides on 19-inch rims and Pirelli tires hiding a set of oversized Brembo brakes. From the first throaty growl of the engine, we knew what the 2010 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG was all about. Although based on the smallest of Mercedes-Benz's U.S. models, the C63 AMG hints at its aggressive nature with shark vents in the air dam and a bulging hood.

In the driver's seat, the flat-bottom steering wheel signals that Mercedes-Benz meant the car to handle. And handle it does. Even maneuvering through a parking lot it feels taut. Turning the wheel reveals a strong connection to the wheels, with a firmness afforded by few other cars.

The C63 AMG delivers a driving experience that makes us want to do very bad things. Blasting up the road, then downshifting behind slower traffic makes the engine burble in a way that sends other cars looking for friendlier lanes. Each black-topped turn engenders an evil grin as we hit the gas midcorner, making the back end slide out in a perfectly controlled manner.

NUMMI Is Reborn For Electric Cars

Thousands of unemployed autoworkers in Northern California are hoping for a future building electric cars. Their hopes center around a new deal between the giant carmaker Toyota and Tesla Motors, an electric car company that's giving new life to a Toyota plant that closed last month.

For 25 years, Toyota ran a unique joint venture with General Motors called New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., also known as NUMMI. That partnership ended when GM went bankrupt. And in April, Toyota shuttered the plant in Fremont, Calif., leaving about 4,700 workers jobless and looking for a miracle.

The agreement between Toyota and Tesla was announced by Toyota's CEO Akio Toyoda, who promised to invest $50 million in Tesla. The fledgling electric carmaker will, in turn, buy the old NUMMI plant, a facility where Toyoda himself had once worked.

Up close, though, the name on the trunk lid is as familiar as bell-bottom pants: Buick Regal.

Though it's not the hippest name in the automotive universe, General Motors hopes the new Regal will be viewed as an athletic, upscale sports sedan and will appeal to Gen X buyers.

It's a critical new vehicle as GM seeks to expand the Buick brand, post-bankruptcy and post-Tiger Woods. At present, Buick sells vehicles that cover about 14% of the overall automotive market. With Regal, that figure doubles.
