M8 New Hybrid Sports Car From BMW?

M8 New Hybrid Sports Car

According to the German magazine Autozeitung, BMW is planning an ‘extreme super sports car’ with hybrid drive and 600hp. The technical basis is ready, but the developers are waiting for the green light from management. The new supercar is expected to be revealed by the spring of 2013.

The new model, rumoured to be called the M8, will be based on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept unveiled at the IAA 2009. Compared to the concept, the upcoming car will be five inches longer, 1.24 meters high, 1.90 meters wide, and will feature a 2+2 configuration.

The hybrid combination consists of a V10 engine from the current M5 and two electric engines; one at the front and one at the back. The first electric motor will deliver 80-115hp and the back one will deliver more than 50hp.

An all-new aluminum chassis, carbon fiber bodywork, fine Kevlar bucket seats, and several magnesium and plastic parts will be developed to ensure that the M8 will weigh just under 1500 kilograms. A sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds should be possible. Top speed shall exceed 300km/h.

By joining forces with Al Ghassan Motors, whose reputation and experience in the Saudi market have proved highly attractive to us, we will ensure our customers receive the very best on both fronts.”

Subaru Impreza Berlinetta – The Rear Engined Concept Car

Subaru Impreza BerlinettaSubaru fans would soon have their prayer for a sports coupe from the Japanese maker answered. Subaru plans to launch their own version of the Toyota FT-86 soon. But until this happens there is the other Subaru coupe from the Italian design firm Beestudio albeit in a conceptual study form.

Subaru Impreza Berlinetta the name given to this concept is aimed to be a high performance two-seater sports car. It uses the platform of the Impreza STI but has been turned around such that the turbocharged engine would now be fitted at the rear-end of the Berlinetta.

The body panels would be made of fiberglass, aluminium or carbon fiber which would help in reducing overall weight of the car. The chassis would be from steel tubes which would also contribute towards lessening body weight of the car.

The CR-Z: Honda's fun little hybrid

Honda CR-Z
Honda may have come up with the first fun hybrid car. The Insight, Prius, Camry, and Fusion are all very practical hybrids, and Lexus makes a few comfortable cruisers. But the 2011 Honda CR-Z made us want to drive fast. We wanted to find the most winding road around and torture the car through the corners.

Honda obliged during our preview drive, prescribing a twisty route north of San Francisco we've previously used to test the BMW M3, Porsche 911, and Audi R8. Those cars had it all over the CR-Z for power and speed, but the plucky little CR-Z showed its stuff in the turns. Honda also set out an autocross course so we could really thrash the CR-Z, a test that we haven't previously seen a hybrid put through.

The CR-Z certainly has its quirks. In other markets it is produced with 2+2 seating, but Honda removed the rear seats for the U.S., launching it as a two-seater. We assume Honda thinks Americans are too fat to use the tiny rear seats. We're not going to argue the point.

The CR-Z's hatchback design means it offers decent cargo space in back; removing the rear seats adds an oddly formed cargo area immediately behind the front seats, the two spaces divided by the former rear seat back rest.

Mixed Reviews on Honda CR-Z as Hybrid and Sports Car

Honda CR-Z
Honda this week gave automotive journalists their first chance behind the wheel of the 2011 Honda CR-Z Hybrid. Honda’s goal with the all-new two-seater is to combine the fuel parsimony of a hybrid with the sportiness of the company’s classic CRX coupe—and to offer it as the most affordable hybrid on the market.

The fuel economy rating of the standard six-speed manual is 31/37 mpg, with the optional automatic (CVT) rated at 35/39 mpg.

"The CR-Z is as much about the driving experience as it is about our commitment to fuel efficiency and affordable hybrid technology," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales at American Honda Motor Co. "We lit the fuse on hybrids," Mendel said.

Did they succeed? On affordability, the answer is yes. The MSRP of the CR-Z, which goes on sale on Aug. 24, is not official, but is expected at less than $20,000. That does make it the lowest priced hybrid on the market—and the only one available with a manual transmission.

2013 Toyota FT-86 badged FR-S

2013 Toyota FT-86Front-rear sport. Not exactly an enticing name, nor is the acronym FR-S, but that's exactly what the latest reports are saying the Toyota FT-86 could be named. The source is a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office filing reserving the name, filed by Toyota on May 27.
http://www.caradvice.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Toyota-FR-S-1-625x416.jpg
The FR-S name is trademarked for use on "automobiles and structural parts thereof," and with only the FT-86 bearing the implicit front-rear, sports car layout of the name, it seems the likely candidate for use. While confirmed for the U.S. earlier this year by Toyota president Jim Lentz, the car is also reportedly delayed to as late as 2013 for design tweaks.

When it does come along, however, expect it to be fundamentally the same as the 2.0-liter boxer-engined four-cylinder sports car unveiled at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. Pricing is expected to tip in below $25,000, and with its planned performance, weight and layout, it's set to be a prime competitor for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, though the Genesis may sport a power advantage.

2011 McLaren MP4 12C Pricing Announced

2011 McLaren MP4 12CMcLaren has announced that the Goodwood Festival would be the venue for the public debut of its MP4 12C sports car. July is the month when the event would be held while sale of the car would commence from next spring onwards. The sports car is estimated to be prices between £125,000 to £175,000.

Demand for the car has been high from the USA and UK where registration number has already reached 2500 and over. The company has planned to make only 1000 units in this year. There is therefore a marked imbalance between demand and supply with the UK and USA making up for the largest market share for this 12C. The company would be coming up with the full scale McLaren sports model cars only by the middle of the decade. That would be a high performance car with two seat and mid engine.

Fourth picture car in the future

Fourth picture car in the future
Fourth picture car in the future Don’t expect big-cabin cars to go into a spiral, though. Consumers keep growing, and they enjoy the comfort too much to squeeze themselves into micro-cars. Look forward instead to a renewed crop of innovations in packaging, accompanied by cheaper and more effective weight saving.

Superminis that weigh 1100kg can’t be afforded, when they used to weigh 800kg. So which are the areas of traditional strength?

Ironically, I believe the Mondeo/Insignia crop of models may generate renewed interest as we wait for the hybrids to arrive. They’re big bodied and well priced, while their staple engines are both advanced and economical. I’m especially impressed by their traditional voluminous estate versions (which is one reason why Volvo should have a care before it kills the traditionalist’s V70).

Third picture car in the future

Third picture car in the futureThird picture car in the future Discovering who’s right (each company doubtless has iron-cast research to justify its point of view) will be fascinating.
The future of car design
Other trends? Big-engined cars are obviously in trouble, now that fuel efficiency is all. That threatens formerly bulletproof premium cars.

Buyers have traditionally used their BMW purchase to justify an extra-performance engine with accompanying trimmings. BMW does perfectly good ‘cooking’ engines, of course, but it’s the pizzazz that earns them the money. If they start making a higher proportion of ordinary cars, as they surely will, the bottom line is bound to suffer.

Second picture car in the future

Second picture car in the future
Second picture car in the future There are signs this week that Volvo is about to redesign its traditional V70 estate - because customers think its roof is too low - just as Renault is preparing to drop its Espace MPV because customers feel, in this new age of insecurity, that the pioneering people-carrier’s glassy, high-riding way of doing things makes them too vulnerable.

First picture car in the future

First picture car in the futureFirst picture car in the future like that will make you say that is very imagine. This car design like capsule or the faster car in the world.
For students of the way car demand is changing — and how design will adapt — the next few years will provide some fascinating spectator sport.

Seems to me that many of the rules about how cars look and are laid out will be rewritten, even before the expected blizzard of hybrid and electric powertrains arrives.

Volvo Ford Motor Co,Tokyo Motor Show

Volvo Ford Motor Co,Tokyo Motor Show Volvo, the Swedish unit of Ford Motor Co., will not participate in the Tokyo Motor Show this fall.

"We have evaluated our participation at motor shows for 2009 to see how we can make the most out of our resources, and this year we decided not to participate at Tokyo," Volvo spokeswoman Maria Bohlin said today in an e-mail.

Ford Motor Co. said earlier this week it would not participate in the show, but a spokeswoman said she could not comment on plans for Volvo or Mazda Motor Corp.

Mazda will participate in this year's show. Last year, Ford raised $540 million by cutting its stake in Mazda from 33.4 percent to just over 13 percent, but the two automakers will continue joint ventures and the sharing of vehicle platforms and powertrains.

Ford joined General Motors and Chrysler LLC in skipping the event this year. Pullouts by non-Japanese automakers and concerns raised by some Japanese automakers stemming from the global auto sales slowdown have cast doubt on whether the October 21-22 show will take place.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association will decide by early next month whether to postpone the show, Toshihiro Iwatake, JAMA's executive director, told Automotive News earlier this week.

If the event is canceled, the next Tokyo Motor Show would be in 2011, Iwatake said.

Several auto companies pulled out of the Detroit auto show, which opens to the public tomorrow. The missing companies included Nissan Motor Co., Suzuki Motor Corp., Porsche AG, Rolls-Royce and Land Rover. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. canceled its corporate presence, but local Mitsubishi dealers put together an exhibit.

Some participating automakers, including federal loan recipients Chrysler LLC and General Motors, toned down their Detroit displays and built single-story exhibition stands to save money.

Best Infiniti adds first ever diesel engine to its Euro range

Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury marque, is a young brand in the European scene, and is currently still in the process of creating brand awareness and starting up operations. Infiniti’s current Euro range consists of its crossovers and the G family of cars, but to make proper inroads in Europe, one needs a diesel, and for a brand which counts America and the Middle East as main markets, Infiniti has none, until now.

Calling it “phase two of the quiet assault on the European luxury car market” Infiniti has developed a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, the first in the brand’s 20 year history. It will initially be available in both the EX and FX crossovers and the M large sedan, which will make its debut this year. “Although we did investigate the possibility of adapting an existing large capacity diesel for Infiniti, we quickly established that nothing on the market met our exacting requirements,” said Jim Wright, VP of Infiniti Europe.

Designated V9X, the new V6 diesel is built in France and will also be used in Renault and Nissan cars. The direct injection Euro 5 engine produces 235 bhp and class-leading torque output of 550 Nm. As a comparison, BMW’s 3.0d engine makes 245 bhp and 540 Nm. Peak torque is achieved from 1,750 rpm all the way to 2,500 rpm, while as much as 500 Nm is available from just 1,500 rpm. Infiniti says that idle speed is exceptionally low at 650 rpm “with none of the NVH usually associated with a diesel”. It will be paired to a seven-speed auto standard on both crossovers.

Interestingly, Infiniti did not use aluminium or cast iron for the engine block, but Compacted Graphite Iron. CGI is said to offer all the benefits of cast iron and more – it has higher levels of stiffness and noise absorption – but without the weight penalty. And while CGI is heavier than a pure aluminium block, Infiniti says there is no need to add stiffening ribs or extra sound deadening material so the weight gain is comparatively modest. The V9X has the lowest vibrations of all benchmarked engines, according to the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

To adapt the EX and FX to the diesel engine, they get new front subframes, different front bumper designs to enhance air flow as well as redesigned sheet metal within the engine bay to house additional radiators.
